Standard Critical Chloride Threshold Test Variability due to Material Sources: principal investigator Ceki Halmen, University of Missouri - Kansas City. Endorsed by ACI Technical Committee: 222 Corrosion of Metals in Concrete.
The large variability of published CT data and lack of a standard CT test method creates significant difficulties for the concrete industry. Researchers cannot compare CT values obtained from their research to a standard value. Practitioners evaluating condition of reinforced concrete structures for maintenance and rehabilitation cannot make a reliable assessment based on measured chloride contents. Designers cannot estimate the service life of their design without a reliable estimate of critical chloride threshold value. Development of a standard critical chloride threshold test with a complete data set regarding its variability will alleviate these issues.

On May 18, voters in Eugene School District 4j will have the opportunity to choose among the candidates for three seats on the board.
The race for Position 3 features two newcomers to elective politics taking on an incumbent. The race for Position 6 has only one candidate, hoping to replace veteran Jim Torrey, who was appointed to fill a seat unexpectedly vacated mid-term. (A second candidate for Position 6 dropped out too late for his name to be deleted from the ballot.) Two new candidates vie for Position 2. For 12 years, this seat was held by Anne Marie Levis, who withdrew from the race to clear the path for a candidate who, she said, “Can do some of the things I can’t.” Then a second candidate tossed his hat in the ring at the last minute. In this program, all six candidates will describe their credentials and opinions about key issues. The order of speakers was set by random drawing. While the positions are numbered, the seats are at-large, and everyone in the district gets to vote on all positions.

Beer Waste Can Now Be Turned Into Biofuel
It turns out that brewing beer results in leftover waste that can be put to good use.
The beer-making process results in lots of leftover grain that is a protein and fiber-rich powder typically used in cattle feed or landfills. Now, Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech) scientists have found a way to make this leftover grain useful by extracting the protein and fiber held inside it and using it to create new types of protein sources, biofuels, and more.
“There is a critical need in the brewing industry to reduce waste,” Haibo Huang, Ph.D., the project’s principal investigator said. Huang and his team collaborated with local breweries to find a way to transform leftover grain into valuable products.
