Facing reduced demand, clinics look to other ways to get vaccine takers


On Thursday. UMass Memorial Health at the Mercantile Center had walk-in vaccination appointments available.  
Dr. Robert Klugman, medical director of employee health and occupational health at UMass Memorial Health, said the vaccines are kept frozen in the refrigerators, and are thawed out as needed throughout the day. If there are any cancellations, Klugman said the Mercantile Center clinic will reach out to a list of interested people.
After a vaccine is thawed at a clinic, Klugman said it must be used between four to six hours. The doses come in vials that can fill six to 10 doses, and the small number of doses in a vial help to ensure that a large number of doses do not go to waste, Klugman said. ....

Worcester health officials believe J&J vaccine effective despite state pause


WORCESTER - Residents who expected to get the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at a city-sponsored clinic may be getting a dose of Pfizer instead, but city health officials still consider the Johnson & Johnson vaccine a good shot. 
Out of an abundance of caution, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration issued a federal recommendation that Johnson & Johnson shots not be given while they review six confirmed cases of a rare and severe blood clot reported in women who had received the vaccine.   
In response to the recommendation from the CDC and FDA, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Tuesday directed all providers to pause administration of Johnson & Johnson vaccines.  ....
