Free buses can help make Worcester a big little city

Andre Leroux As a native son of Worcester, I grew up in a city that didn’t know whether it wanted to be Wormtown or the “Paris of the 80s.” We’ve always had a bit of a complex. Do we even want to be a city? Or do we want to be a town?  Things have changed over the last 20 years. Worcester has brought housing and jobs back downtown. But there’s a third piece of the puzzle: transportation. It’s impossible to have a bustling, walkable city without a very good public transportation system.  There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) improve service so it gets you to more of the places you want to go, and 2) make it easier to get on the bus.

Racial discrimination in mortgage lending has created a segregated Worcester

Image Bolstered by grassroots organizing, human service nonprofits and other concerned citizens, city leadership and stakeholders are engaging residents in conversations about an array of deep-seeded inequities, many centered around and rooted in all of the ways systemic racism is woven into the fabric of everyday life in Central Massachusetts. In the past year, these conversations have centered around issues like police brutality against the city’s Black and Hispanic communities, as well as racial inequities in the city’s schools and on the school committee. These are community-oriented issues: Children typically attend schools closest to them based on district mapping, and neighborhoods of color around the U.S. are demonstrably and statistically over-policed.

Poor neighborhoods with diverse populations struggle to sustain economic development

Downtown Fitchburg has struggled to attract new growth when so many people are following jobs to more prosperous areas or finding affordable areas elsewhere. It only compounds the problem when residents looking to buy a home downtown are the least likely to be able to be approved for a mortgage of any neighborhood in Worcester County.
