The harsh stereotypes of the people of Appalachia are deeply entrenched in the American consciousness. During the 2016 presidential campaign, those ugly caricatures flooded the airwaves, newspapers, websites, and social media accounts of powerful news outlets responsible for accurately depicting the people of a sprawling region that ranges from portions of southwest New York state southward through Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and into parts of Georgia and Alabama.
“Welcome to Trump County, USA,” Vanity Fair blared in a headline on a story reported from Monongalia County, West Virginia. The writer led the story with a lurid anecdote: “It is a little after midnight on a Friday in late January. I am in a strip club in Morgantown, West Virginia, drinking (expletive) American beer that tastes like ice ....

Ford Motor Co. revealed the name of its long-anticipated electric F-150 on Monday and said it plans to unveil the vehicle this month.
It s the Ford F-150 Lightning, resurrecting a sub-nameplate once used on certain Ford pickups and still loved by collectors today.
The company said little about the capabilities or design of the vehicle, though it released a teaser image showing the Lightning insignia and said production will begin in spring 2022. ....

At Bedrock Quarry in Troy, Missouri. General Motors is storing several hundred Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups and full-size vans while they await parts to complete production at Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri. Then they will ship to dealerships. The industry is faced with a massive shortage of semiconductor chips used in car parts causing automakers to build and store vehicles in certain instances.

GM pickups delayed by chip shortage: Thousands parked, awaiting parts

In late January, retired General Motors employee Joseph Jones bought a 2021 GMC Sierra full-size pickup after having driven his 2004 Sierra for 17 years.
Jones, 68, tracked the production of the new light-duty pickup in cherry red from his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He saw that it was built on Feb. 15 at GM s Silao Assembly Plant in Mexico, so he eagerly awaited its arrival any day.
But as of May 5, Jones pickup remained in Mexico, parked alongside thousands of other GM pickups built shy of the final parts needed to complete them because of a global semiconductor chip shortage.
I am getting more aggravated by the day, Jones said. The customers are stuck in the middle and I would love better communication through General Motors. I know everybody has been in the same situation, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Nissan . everybody has been held hostage by the shortage of this chip.” ....
