Sudbury adds 700 jobs in April


Job prospects brightened in Sudbury during April, Statistics Canada says.
There were 300 more full-time jobs in April 2021 compared to a month earlier, StatsCan report Friday. A gain of 400 part-time positions led to an increase of 700 total jobs in April.

The number of full-time jobs in April was up from the previous month in natural resources, construction, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing, professional and scientific services, education, healthcare, and accommodation and food services.
Full-time job losses in April occurred in agriculture, utilities, trade services, the financial sector, business and building services, information and cultural services, and public administration. ....

The Ontario government has allocated essential businesses access to six times as many rapid COVID-19 tests than they plan to set aside for the province’s school system as it completes its return to in-person learning.
In the next few months, essential businesses including Bombardier Aviation, Ellis Don Construction and Ontario Power Generation will begin to receive 300,000 one-time use rapid tests per week, while up to 50,000 each week will be set aside for use in the school system.
Officials said the difference is explained by the fact that symptomatic students and teachers will be referred to the province’s existing COVID-19 assessment centres, as they have always been, with rapid tests to be used as a fill-in-the gap or “adjunct” measure. ....

Ontario businesses have record-low confidence in economy, says chamber

A record number of Ontario businesses say they don’t have confidence in the province’s economic future, according to a new report from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC).
In its fifth annual economic report, the OCC which represents 60,000 Ontario businesses presented results of a survey of members across the province of their confidence in the economy, their own companies, and employment growth. 
The numbers were among the lowest the chamber has ever recorded. ....
