Bay Area Reporter :: San Jose queer spaces looking for new home


The LGBTQ Youth Space and LGBTQ Wellness programs in San Jose are searching for a new home.
Adrienne Keel, director of LGBTQ programs at Family and Children Services of Silicon Valley, a division of Caminar, announced the youth space s impending move on its Facebook page March 26. The agency s LGBTQ programs department oversees the two community services, which are both currently housed at the youth space s downtown San Jose location at 452 South First Street.
This will be the youth space s third home since launching in a small room in the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ Community Center in 2009. The youth center moved to its current location in July 2012. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: California juvenile parole board member Riddle faces LGBTQ opposition


Phlunté Riddle, a member of California s juvenile parole board, is once again facing opposition from LGBTQ leaders who question the former Pasadena police officer s ability to adjudicate cases that come before her. Her detractors have called on Governor Gavin Newsom to rescind his nomination of Riddle to the oversight body.
Riddle has been serving on the Board of Juvenile Hearings since being named to it by Newsom in October 2019. The position, for which Riddle earns $159,068 a year, requires confirmation by the state Senate.
Due to the COVID pandemic, Riddle s confirmation hearing had to be delayed. The state Senate s Rules Committee is scheduled to take it up Wednesday, March 17, and Newsom is calling on lawmakers to confirm her. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: People with HIV will be prioritized for COVID vaccine in SF as soon as next week


San Francisco officials held a virtual town hall intended to inform LGBTQs in particular about the three authorized COVID-19 vaccines, while on the Peninsula, the San Mateo County Pride Center announced it hopes to set up a vaccination clinic for the queer community.
Dr. Susan Philip, San Francisco s acting health officer, said during the March 9 town hall that it is expected that beginning Monday, the state will allow health care providers to use their own clinical judgment in vaccinating individuals ages 16-64 who are deemed to be at the very highest risk to get very sick from COVID-19 due to medical conditions. ....

Bay Area Reporter :: Boudin recall campaign begins signature-gathering


The San Francisco Department of Elections has approved a recall effort of District Attorney Chesa Boudin to begin the signature-gathering process.
Matthew Selby, campaign services division manager for the elections department, confirmed to the Bay Area Reporter March 9 that the petition was approved for circulation March 4.
As the Bay Area Reporter previously reported, Richie Greenberg, a business adviser and activist who in 2018 was a Republican candidate for mayor, began the recall effort after a petition urging Boudin to resign received almost 15,000 signatures.
That petition was started amid a public outcry after a parolee was allegedly responsible for a hit-and-run that killed two pedestrians in the South of Market neighborhood on New Year s Eve. ....

A binational couple who was separated due to the coup in Myanmar has been reunited in San Francisco.
For two years, Kenny Kruse worked to get his fiancé, Yar Zar Min, a visa to come to the U.S. The couple waited through delays caused by the previous administration and extension of the travel ban that included Myanmar. Last year, the global coronavirus pandemic kept them separated.
Then, on February 1, a military coup took place in Myanmar.
Finally, there was good news as Yar Zar Min arrived in San Francisco February 26.
Kruse still cannot believe he and his partner are together at last. ....
