An Egyptian woman who dared: the Nawal El Saadawi I knew

Throughout the Middle East and beyond, the name Nawal El Saadawi is not one that can be received with indifference. During her lifetime and even after her passing on 21 March 2021, the Egyptian author, physician and activist evokes intense feelings that range from love and respect to hatred and offence.
This comes as no surprise. Nawal was someone who unabashedly crossed all boundaries set by religious, political and societal authorities. When I had the privilege of meeting her, we immediately became friends.
Something in her eyes, manner and voice gripped my attention. She spoke for me and for millions of others who were silenced by layers and layers of falsehoods and banal obligations in the name of honour and duty. She ‘adopted’ me, like she did with many of the young people she met. ....

Editorial: State must protect pregnant workers

A woman shouldn’t have to choose between her job and her health or the health of her unborn child.
Thirty states have laws to address this concern, requiring employers to offer pregnant workers accommodations such as additional breaks, help with manual labor and schedule modifications.
Indiana has no such law.
While many Hoosier employers do the right thing by voluntarily providing accommodations for pregnant women, others demand that pregnant employees continue to work under the same rules and conditions as other workers.
A bill that would have fixed the problem failed in the Republican-dominated state Senate in 2020. This year, two additional bills died without a hearing. Members of the GOP supermajority contend that such legislation would place an outsized burden on employers, particularly small businesses. ....

Watch now: Illinois Senate Republican leader pushes for expanded COVID-19 liability protections

SARAH MANSUR
Capitol News Illinois
SPRINGFIELD — The top Republican in the state Senate has introduced a bill to shield health care providers and others from being held responsible for injuries or deaths related to COVID-19 exposure.
Last April, Gov. J.B. Pritzker extended civil liability protections to health care workers, health care volunteers and hospitals in one of his executive orders. But the executive order expired in the end of June and was not reissued.
McConchie said the bill applies to individuals in these settings, as long as an individual’s action at issue was “in substantial compliance or was consistent with any federal or State statute, rule, regulation, order, or public health guidance related to COVID-19 that was applicable to the person or activity at issue at the time of the alleged exposure or potential exposure.” ....

School District seeing few cases of possible norovirus

Mesa County health officials are warning of a gastrointestinal illness that looks a lot like the norovirus.
Mesa County Public Health issued a guidance Tuesday about prevention methods after detecting cases of the contagious gastrointestinal virus from child-care facilities. The virus has since made its way to some students at all levels throughout School District 51, bringing to mind the norovirus issues that ran through District 51 in November of 2019.
Ideally, the district would rather not deal with norovirus again. But if it’s going to, now is one of the best times.
“We had a four-day weekend last week, so that kept kids away from each other,” said Emily Shockley, spokesperson for District 51. “Now we have spring break next week, too.” ....
