For too long, research was done 'on_ First Nations peoples, not _with' them. Universities can change this

To meet their responsibilities to different communities, researchers have incorporated methodologies such as:
participatory action research, in which members of the community affected by the research actively participate in different parts of the project
public patient involvement, in which non-academic people work as employees or volunteers in organisations’ high-level work
community-based participatory research, which aims to equitably involve community members and others in research projects.
Each of these are slightly different, and are used variously in different disciplines, but their increasing presence affirms that involving communities in research is crucial for good research outcomes.
However, we have found approaches putting community at the centre of research beyond disciplinary siloes have not yet been documented in a comprehensive way. Our book builds on previous research by bringing together various community-led approaches, including from educ ....

There is an upside to arriving in Vanuatu with just a GPS, a notepad, and a few basic supplies. University of Sydney archaeologist Dr James Flexner learnt this when instead of delving into technical work, he met with local chiefs and elders who explained the local landscape of Williams Bay. “The result was ultimately probably richer and more interesting than if I had simply followed the orthodox approach to archaeological survey,” he said. ....

Early in the pandemic, Fiona Lowenstein knew that the full story of COVID-19 was not being told.
She was 26 and healthy, and after testing positive for the virus last spring, she expected an easy recovery. But after a two-night stay in the hospital, she came home to experience severe fatigue and an upset stomach. She had a difficult time focusing her thoughts, and she was scared.
No one had said anything about these symptoms, and after posting on Instagram, she learned she wasn’t alone. As co-founder of a queer and feminist collective in New York exploring issues of health and social justice, she suddenly saw purpose in forming a new community. ....
