2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission votes to petition CA Supreme Court for January 14, 2022 deadline


Last night, the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission (Commission) unanimously voted (14-0) to petition the California Supreme Court to make January 14, 2022 the deadline to submit final maps to the Secretary of State. The motion read:
Motion to seek an order from the CA State Supreme Court confirming that the calculation of the “additional federal delay” as used in the Padilla decision is to be based upon the date that the Statewide Database is able to reformat the legacy dataset into a usable format for building the statewide redistricting database, with a request for an additional extension of the deadline for approval and certification of the final maps to January 14, 2022 to allow for meaningful public input to account for the annual holiday period. ....

California Citizens Redistricting Commission to host Communities of Interest virtual meeting for Orange County


Districts must be of nearly equal population to comply with the U.S. Constitution.
Districts must comply with the Voting Rights Act to ensure that minorities have a fair opportunity to elect representatives of their choice.
Districts must be drawn contiguously, so that all parts of the district are connected to each other.
Districts must minimize the division of counties, cities, neighborhoods, and communities of interest to the extent possible.
Districts should be geographically compact such that nearby areas of population are not bypassed for more distant populations.
Where practicable, each Senate District should consist of two complete and adjacent Assembly Districts, and Board of Equalization districts should consist of ten complete and adjacent State Senate Districts. This is known as nesting. ....

2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission hires state and regional outreach staff


This week, the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission (Commission) announced the addition of three outreach staff members who will be charged with providing region specific and statewide support to the Commission’s outreach and engagement activities.
Sulma Hernandez joins the Commission as the Outreach Coordinator. Kimberly Briggs will serve as Field Team Lead for the Greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Jose Eduardo Chavez will serve as Field Team Lead for the Central California region. Andrew Amorao will serve as Field Team Lead for the San Diego and Inland Empire regions.

2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission hires Anthony Pane as Chief Counsel


This week, the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission (Commission) announced the hiring of Anthony Pane as Chief Counsel. Mr. Pane joins the Commission from the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), where he managed the day-to-day activities of attorneys and advised Board/Bureaus on Bagley-Keene requirements among other things.
“The Commission is fortunate to have Mr. Pane join our team,” stated Chair Alicia Fernández. “He brings a wealth of experience working for state agencies and advising on Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act adherence, the state law that ensures the Commission functions in a transparent manner.
