Oxygen therapy may improve hypoxia-induced B cell abnormalities in COVID-19
Researchers in the United States have demonstrated early and persistent B cell abnormalities in patients with moderate or severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that may be largely driven by hypoxia.
Given that the B cell response is a crucial part of the host immune defense against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – the causative agent of COVID-19 – these deficits could have a significant impact on the disease course, says Kenneth Smith from the University of Cambridge and colleagues.
“Hypoxia might contribute to B cell pathology in COVID-19 and in other hypoxic states,” writes the team. “Through this mechanism, it may impact on COVID-19 outcome, and be remediable through early oxygen therapy.” ....

Milo Hughes, 5, from York dies of a brain tumour

A grieving mother has told how she has lost a second son to brain cancer after also losing her husband to the condition last year.
Five-year-old Milo Hughes, from York, died this week, after his nine-year-old brother Oscar passed away from brain tumour in 2014.
Marie Hughes, 44, lost her husband Ian from a brain tumour last year.
Tragically, as the family were preparing to bury Mr Hughes, 49, Milo was diagnosed.
Marie said that she and Milo s brothers Seb and Lucas were with their beautiful happy Milo when he died this week surrounding him with love, stories and even a little laughter. ....

Stephen A. Inge, Son of Iota Club Co-Owner, Remembered for "Grit, Smarts, and Wits"

Stephen A. Inge, employee and son of the co-owner of the now-shuttered Iota Club, died earlier this month at the age of 41. He battled for decades a very rare condition known as Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome, which causes tumors to grow throughout the body.
In his memory, there will be an outdoor gathering at Knights of Columbus on Little Falls Road this Saturday, May 15 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the VHL Alliance.
Inge was the son of Jane Negrey Inge, who co-owned (with her brother) the well-known Arlington music and arts performance venue Iota Club. The club closed in 2017 after more than two decades at 2832 Wilson Blvd in Clarendon. ....
