Oxygen therapy may improve hypoxia-induced B cell abnormalities in COVID-19
Researchers in the United States have demonstrated early and persistent B cell abnormalities in patients with moderate or severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that may be largely driven by hypoxia.
Given that the B cell response is a crucial part of the host immune defense against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – the causative agent of COVID-19 – these deficits could have a significant impact on the disease course, says Kenneth Smith from the University of Cambridge and colleagues.
“Hypoxia might contribute to B cell pathology in COVID-19 and in other hypoxic states,” writes the team. “Through this mechanism, it may impact on COVID-19 outcome, and be remediable through early oxygen therapy.” ....

Prior to joining VHL Alliance, how did you get exposure to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)? How do those experiences carry over to your work with the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) community?
My passion for DEI stems from my own lived experiences. Much of my own personal journey was spent trying to find my purpose and where I “fit in.” I am part of a marginalized population and experienced a lack of access to resources, including exposure to education, but I knew I had a passion for helping people. It was during my graduate program where I fell in love with service and started becoming involved in the community. I’ve been in the nonprofit world now for 17 years. I always tell people: creating access provides opportunity. I will strive to ....

Miss Payel Bhattacharya, was diagnosed with a rare disease von Hippel-Lindau or VHL. It is a genetic form of cancer. VHL patients battle a series of tumors throughout their life. VHL may occur in up to 10 organs of the body with a possibility of neuroendocrine tumors.
Her autobiographical fictional account has been published by Sahitya Akademi. She also wrote, The Adventures of Mum and Princess is her attempt to write mystery stories. Even with the rarest form of brain tumors, she took the challenge to write a paranormal novel with a dash of spy-thriller known as Midnight. She also wrote her survival story “A Warrior Dies Dancing That’s Who I Am…” She finds positivity and warmth through her life writing and poetry also through creating much-needed awareness. LESS.
