The man killed in a shooting Wednesday near a food cart pod in Northeast Portland was identified as the stepson of a prominent pastor who has long advocated against gun violence in the city.
Jalon Yoakum, 33, was shot about 5:30 p.m. in the pod’s parking lot on Northeast Sandy Boulevard near Northeast 118th Avenue.
Yoakum is the son of Twauna Hennessee and stepson of Pastor J.W. Matt Hennessee of Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church, an outspoken activist who has pushed city leaders to provide extra police and community resources to stem the surge of shootings.

Mayor Ted Wheeler plans on asking his fellow city council members to okay $1.7 million in emergency city funds to immediately re-establish a police patrol similar to the dissolved Gun Violence Prevention Team (GVRT).
In a proposal sent to Wheeler's office by the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), Assistant Chief Jami Resch (who had a brief stint as PPB chief in early 2020) suggested the team be comprised of 12 police officers and two sergeants, and be assisted by 5 detectives focused on gun violence crimes. These positions would be filled by reassigning current PPB officers and rehiring recently retired officers.

When asked to say 'Black lives matter,' the Clackamas County Commissioner responded that 'all lives matter.'
Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull has apologized for social media posts expressing Islamophobic and anti-immigrant views, but said that recent public conversation has taken them out of context.
"I certainly didn't imagine that some of (the posts) would be presented to countless people, causing fear and anxiety," Shull said during an event on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Muslim Educational Trust in Tigard, describing an email with screenshots of the postings as intended to "cause a public media storm."

Martin Luther King Jr. had a powerful message to deliver when he visited Portland in 1961, one that continues to resonate 60 years later as the country experiences a surge in racist rhetoric and violence.
“We must learn to live together as brothers,” he told the crowd at downtown’s Civic Auditorium. “Or perish as fools.”
