Iran to Pay $150,000 to Families of Victims in Ukraine Jet Shootdown

Iran’s Cabinet has allocated $150,000 for the families of each of the 176 victims of a Ukrainian passenger jet shot down by the Iranian military on January 8.
Two missiles brought down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 soon after it took off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini international Airport, killing all passengers and crew. More than 100 of the victims were Iranian citizens.
The downing came five days after the US assassinated Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Quds Forces, and hours after Iran struck two Iraqi bases with missiles, injuring 50 US troops. ....

It isn’t easy to determine what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne or Transport Minister Marc Garneau mean, exactly, or what they genuinely expect, when they talk about seeking “accountability” from the Khomeinist regime in Iran for the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 and the slaughter of 176 innocents last January.
For his part, Champagne used some uncharacteristically straightforward language on Tuesday in rejecting the Islamic Republic’s attribution of “human error” to explain away the missile attack that brought down the plane and ended the lives of 55 Canadians and another 83 permanent residents, students and others with direct ties to Canada. ....
