Art by Indigenous prisoners can forge links with culture and a future away from crime


Featuring over 350 artworks created by more than 320 artists, The Torch’s annual exhibition, Confined 12, is its largest to date. All of the artists in the Victorian not-for-profit organisation’s show are Indigenous and either in prison or recently released.
The exhibition and the program that precedes it allows them to be seen not as “criminals” or “offenders”, but as people of value, proud Indigenous men and women, citizens and artists.
Bringing about this identity change is critical for exiting the cycle of crime and prison. It’s a difficult and challenging process, but people willing to engage with the art produced can make a big difference. ....

Campaign to donate First Nations books to kids in disaster-hit communities


Gunai woman Kirli Saunders is always looking for new ways of empowering the younger generations.
Her latest project aims to put more books into the hands of young people, whose lives have been affected by natural disasters.
84,000 First Nations people, a quarter of the NSW and Victorian Indigenous populations, were affected by drought and severe bushfires in 2019 and 2020. Some families are sill living in temporary homes and many have felt the economic impact especially hard.
After working with teachers living in drought and bushfire affected communities recently, Saunders says she wants to do what she can to help students, teachers and families who have struggled. ....
