When one cannot achieve something on one’s own, one turns to knowledgeable friends. If the U.S. wishes to see the blessings of liberty rain down on the people of Cuba, it is going to have to rely heavily on its friends while other steps continue to serve a more symbolic purpose.
On July 22, the Biden administration issued new sanctions against Cuba in the form of “blocking” all property interests of its minister of defense, Álvaro López Miera, and that of a military special forces “brigade” commonly known in Cuba as the Black Berets. Both the minister and the Black Berets have been integral to Cuba’s arrest, beating and intimidation of those who on July 11 started nationwide protests in the streets valiantly shouting “liberty” and “we are not afraid” all at great risk to themselves.
