AI technology boosting fledgling turtle survival rates

The Hon Sussan Ley MP
Minister for the Environment
The Morrison Government’s National Environmental Science Program (NESP) is bringing together scientists, the latest AI technology and the traditional knowledge of Cape York Indigenous rangers to boost the survival rates of turtle hatchlings in Australia’s remote far north.
NESP is supporting a collaboration between technology giant Microsoft, CSIRO and Aak Puul Ngantam (APN) Cape York to give rangers critical, real-time information to protect endangered turtle nests from feral predators.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the world-first AI-infused cloud-based system would make a real difference to the work of local rangers and to the survival rates of sea turtles. ....

Scientists achieve atomic scale manipulation of magnets

(MENAFN - NewsIn.Asia)
Lancaster, February 18 - An international team of scientists during recent research has been successful in manipulating magnets at the atomic level. This new discovery will be helpful in attaining fast and energy-efficient future data processing technologies.
The results of this study are published in the prestigious journal Nature Materials by the international team from Lancaster, Delft, Nijmegen, Liege, and Kiev.
Physicist Dr Rostislav Mikhaylovskiy from Lancaster University said: With stalling efficiency trends of current technology, new scientific approaches are especially valuable. Our discovery of the atomically-driven ultrafast control of magnetism opens broad avenues for fast and energy-efficient future data processing technologies essential to keep up with our data hunger. ....

Frederic Lens: building bridges in biodiversity research
Four green research institutes in Leiden are joining forces to integrate evolution and biodiversity research, at local and at the national level. Pivot in this collaboration is Frederic Lens.
Frederic holding a so-called giant woody walking stick cabbage native to the Canary Islands, one of the most spectacular cases of convergent evolution towards woodiness on islands.
‘Fantastic research is being done at the Institute of Biology Leiden, the Institute of Environmental Sciences, the Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the Hortus botanicus Leiden. But there is certainly still a lot to be done through new multidisciplinary projects between the institutes’, says Frederic Lens. ‘That is what I want to commit to.’ ....

Scientists make 3D heart scan breakthrough for animals and humans

Date Time
Scientists make 3D heart scan breakthrough for animals and humans
The University of Manchester scientists have created the most detailed ever 3D scan of a rare form of congenital heart disease.
The ‘walk through’ 3D video for the first time allows a precise anatomical classification of the disease and has important implications on future treatment for many of the heart defects humans- and animals – are born with.
The study, now published in the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, started by chance when a Japanese veterinary researcher at Ritsumeikan University contacted the team at Manchester.
When the pet cat Dr Shu Nakao had been treating called Mi-ke sadly died, Dr Nakao had not been able to make an accurate diagnosis post mortem and decided to ask for the Manchester team’s help. ....
