'Just hold on': Parents have a message for students who are struggling with pandemic


As he got older, Nicholas carried other weights — loneliness, isolation, depression.
The load became unbearable, and on Feb. 12, 15-year old Nicholas died by suicide.
He was a sophomore at Atkins High School who loved technology, anime, memes, staring at the stars and dousing ranch dressing on his food.
Most of all, Nicholas loved being with his friends, just goofing off.
But that sort of behavior, the favored past time of teenagers for generations, came to a dizzying and abrupt halt last year when the rapid spread of COVID-19 prompted Gov. Roy Cooper to shut down schools across the state.
Nicholas never adjusted to the sudden collapse of his social structure, his parents, Bob and Ana, said. ....

Some WS/FCS students will spend four days a week learning in-person

Some Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools students will start spending more time receiving in-person instruction in the classroom instead of learning remotely. The school board decided on Tuesday night to increase the number of days students are in school buildings by eliminating cohorts for fourth and fifth grades and some middles schools. Fourth and fifth-grade cohorts will be eliminated to allow students to attend school in-person four days a week. This goes into effect on March 8 for fourth grade and starts on March 15 for fifth graders. Middle schools splint into four cohorts will shift to two cohorts, as long as 6 feet of social distancing can be adhered to in classrooms, the school district said. The district will begin working with exceptional students that have IEPs and 504 plans to offer in-person learning to middle and high school students four days per week starting March 15.
