US to donate 750,000 vaccine doses - Taipei Times

The US is to donate 750,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan, a delegation of three US senators said in Taipei yesterday.
The delegation made the announcement during a brief stopover in Taiwan.
The White House on Thursday announced that it aims to donate at least 80 million doses globally by the end of this month. The donation would be part of the first tranche of 25 million doses.
“It was critical to the United States that Taiwan be included in the first group to receive vaccines, because we recognize your urgent need and we value this partnership,” US Senator Tammy Duckworth ....

Since the Solomon Islands and Kiribati switched their diplomatic relationship from Taipei to Beijing in September 2019, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has not been able to poach any more of Taiwan’s allies in what would soon become a complete two-year period.
This development is significant when taking into consideration that over just about three years after President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) took office, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) government had used its economic resources to get seven allies of Taiwan to switch recognition.
Several factors have played a role in this “grace period” for Taiwan. For starters, former US president Donald Trump’s “trade war” occupied most of the Chinese government’s attention for a while, and before it could even appropriately deal with this dispute, the CCP faced months of escalating protests in Hong Kong that culminated in the i ....

Taipei, April 20 (CNA) U.S. representatives from both parties introduced a bill on Monday the Taiwan International Solidarity Act to step up U.S. efforts to counter Beijing s growing attempts to isolate Taiwan from international organizations.
The bill is co-sponsored by Ami Bera (D-CA), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, John Curtis (R-UT), as well as four co-chairs of the Taiwan Caucus Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Albio Sires (D-NJ), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Steve Chabot (R-OH).
The bill is aimed at amending the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act of 2019, or the TAIPEI Act, that was enacted in March 2020, according to the draft bill. ....
