A new festival called Eat, Drink, Play and Stay is coming to the capital next month and aims to supercharge Wellington s hospitality sector.
A collaboration between Hospitality NZ, WellingtonNZ and Wellington City Council, the industry-led event runs May 6-16.
More than 100 venues will participate in Wellington-themed food and drink pairings, and headline events include Opera on the Menu, Dirty Little Drag Bingo, a Psychic Supper and a Bootleggers Murder Mystery Banquet. ....

A team of hotels and hospitality professionals left furloughed and unemployed by the Covid-19 crisis have launched a new social platform driven by mentoring to help rebuild the sector. 
 
Otolo (myotolo.com) is a free, government-backed platform powered by its community to learn, network, share ideas and develop solutions help the hospitality sector rebuild and recover from the past traumatic 12 months.   
 
Otolo evolved from a pro-bono online mentoring platform offering support to peers and younger professionals who were out of work, furloughed, or working in a fast-changing situation. After being awarded a UK Government grant to develop this into a full service, the team has been on a mission to support the hospitality industry and benefit workers globally at all levels in an ever-increasingly competitive job market.   ....

Travel and tourism were among the first sectors to be hit in 2020, due to the outbreak of the Covid2019 pandemic and the resultant closure of borders. It has also been one of the most affected industries and probably will take the longest to revive, with both leisure and business travel taking the brunt. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTCC), the pandemic is likely to cost the tourism sector almost $22 billion and 50 million jobs. Last year alone, India s hospitality and tourism sector suffered an economic wipe-out estimated to be up to Rs 15 lakh crore. And just when it began to show signs of recovery, the country is witnessing a resurgence in cases, dimming the outlook for the sector. ....

Mumbai: In a last-ditch measure, the apex Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) sent an SOS to all Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries on Monday, seeking urgent relief measures to help save the industry from doom as nearly one-third of hotels and restaurants across the country have shut down permanently.
It pointed out that with the fresh Covid-19 wave and new restrictions on the hotel industry business across states, the crucial sector has again become the worst-affected like in 2020. ....
