After a busy day of grocery shopping and other errands, Diane Bell slid into a kitchen chair and took out her at-home coronavirus test kits. She swabbed both her nostrils and mixed a few chemicals, and within a few minutes, a blue line materialized on an indicator strip.
“Negative!” she called out to her partner. It was her seventh test in three weeks, and so far, so good. ....

As public health officials warn that the new COVID-19 variant originating in the U.K. could become dominant across the U.S. by March, the nation’s largest testing companies and laboratories say their coronavirus tests are prepared to accurately identify new virus strains as they emerge.
Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp., two of the biggest test processing labs in the U.S., say they haven’t reported any changes to the accuracy of their testing data with false negatives from the new U.K. coronavirus variant. ....

Georgia mom changes view of returning to school after her son was sickened with COVID-19

Brookhaven, Georgia (WGCL) The mom of a Brookhaven child, who spent more than a week in the hospital due to complications from the coronavirus, believes now is not the time to return to in-person learning.
On Wednesday, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said teachers do not need to get vaccinated for schools to safely reopen.
“There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen, and that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
Alejandro Cortez disagrees. Her 10-year-old son, David, spent 15 days in the ICU after contracting the virus. Cortez said her son’s symptoms were mild at first, but weeks later his health started to deteriorate. ....

Researchers create detailed simulations to show sickle cells generate large forces

Detailed simulations reveal new information on sickle cell disease
Although there has yet to be a cure for sickle cell disease, researchers recently created detailed simulations on the
Comet system at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) showing how these stiff red blood cells flow through blood vessels, deforming and colliding along the way.
The study, recently published in the
Physical Review Fluids journal, reveals new information regarding the ways in which sickle cells collide with one another as well as healthy cells and blood vessel walls.
Our new simulations showed how the motions of sickle cells near vessel walls generate large forces. The forces caused by these sickle cells impact healthy cells on the blood vessel walls, which in turns causes inflammation. ....
