Berkeley City Council discusses mayor's budget recommendations


The Berkeley City Council Budget and Finance Committee discussed Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín’s proposed supplemental budget recommendations for the 2022 fiscal year Tuesday.
Arreguín, alongside Councilmembers Lori Droste and Kate Harrison, examined various expenditures, encompassing increased budgets for the Berkeley Police Department, or BPD, as well as funding climate action.
His budget recommendations included increasing BPD personnel funding by $2 million to account for costs such as pensions and healthcare benefits, according to Harrison. While BPD’s budget increased, the updated funding is still less than BPD’s total costs sustained during the 2021 fiscal year.
The proposed personnel expenditures will also fund data analysts within BPD, Harrison added. ....

Berkeley City Council held a discussion on the fiscal budget for 2022. The council also passed 37 items, some of which included traffic measures.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, which started nearly two hours behind schedule and adjourned at 11:45 p.m., the Berkeley City Council discussed the 2022 fiscal year budget and approved 37 items, including traffic calming measures and Willard Park ambassadors.
The traffic calming measures, authored by Councilmembers Susan Wengraf and Sophie Hahn, will provide $150,000 toward protecting pedestrians accessing Cragmont Elementary School. The measures followed the deaths of Anthony Rollins and Ruby Edwards in the car accident on Marin Avenue near the school. ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio Juanita Rucker said she was praying as she watched a judge in Minnesota read the jury’s verdict in former police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial.
Rucker, a Cleveland resident, knows the pain of losing a loved one like George Floyd’s family. Gathered with dozens of others at Public Square in downtown Cleveland on Tuesday evening, she identified herself as the godmother of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old shot and killed by police outside Cudell Recreation Center in 2014.
