Johnny Pacheco and Fania Records essential listening guide

If the New York salsa scene were its own galaxy — a glittering cluster where artists from across the Caribbean and the United States orbited around one another in a feverish dance — the late Johnny Pacheco was the gravitational pull that held them together.
Pacheco, the famed bandleader, flutist, percussionist and co-founder of the groundbreaking salsa label Fania Records, died Monday at 85. His wife, Maria Elena “Cuqui” Pacheco, confirmed his death of complications from pneumonia.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Pacheco inherited his musical prowess from his father, Rafael Azarias Pacheco, bandleader and clarinetist of the renowned Santa Cecilia Orchestra. The Pacheco family emigrated from the Dominican Republic to the Bronx in 1946, when Johnny was 11 years old. From there he dedicated himself to two courses of study — engineering and music. It was after a short stint as an engineering student at Brooklyn Tech that he pivoted to the Juilliard School of Music, where he specialized in Latin percussion.

Johnny Pacheco, a Dominican-born musician who was the co-founder of Fania Records, often called the Motown of salsa music, an up-tempo, dance-driven style of Latin American music that he helped make a global sensation in the 1960s and 1970s, died Feb. 15 at a hospital in Teaneck, N.J. He was 85.
The cause was pneumonia, said a son, Elis Pacheco. He also had Parkinson’s disease.
Mr. Pacheco, who was dubbed the “godfather of salsa,” was a Juilliard-trained musician and bandleader, but his greatest contributions may have been as an impresario.

Salsa music has lost one of its greatest pillars, Johnny Pacheco, as he waves his goodbye at 85. ABC7 reported that the co-founder of Fania records had been hospitalized in New York City a few days earlier due to pneumonia. His wife, Maria Elena "Cuqui" Pacheco, also shared this news on the artist's Facebook account.
In a Twitter post, Fania Records noted that the musician was "the man most responsible for the genre of salsa music." The record company also said that Johnny Pacheco was "a visionary and his music will live on eternally."

The Latin music world is mourning the death of salsa legend Johnny Pacheco, who died at New Jersey’s Holy Name Medical Center on Monday. Sources say he had been hospitalized for complications stemming from pneumonia. Pacheco was 85.
Pacheco -- a Dominican-born and New York-raised bandleader, arranger, composer and producer -- co-founded Fania Records in the 1960s with lawyer Jerry Masucci. Home to artists such as Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, Willie Colón and Celia Cruz, to name a few, the label helped propel the Latin big band, Afro-Cuban jazz, boogaloo and salsa movements.
