SCOTT COUNTY, Miss. – On the night of Feb. 8, 2018, Willie Andrew Jones Jr. and Alexis Rankin argued in the car on the way to her parents home in Scott County, Mississippi.
The couple were going through a rough patch in their relationship, but they had a 3-month-old child together, and the 21-year-old Jones wanted to reconcile.
They continued fighting when they arrived at the 19-year-old Rankin’s home, where a group of her family members was staying. At some point, Jones walked out, leaving Rankin inside. Not long afterward, Rankin’s stepfather was calling 911 to say Jones was dead. ....

Family of man found hanging on tree at MS home gets $11M in civil suit

Willie Jones Jr., 21, was found hanging from a tree in front of girlfriend Alexis Rankin s home the night of Feb. 8, 2018.
Jones family sued Rankin, her stepfather and several others for not acting to prevent Jones death, according to court documents filed in December 2020 in the Hinds County Circuit Court. The lawsuit alleged stepfather Harold O Bryant, with the help of others, either hanged Jones or failed to stop Jones from taking his own life.
Jill Collen Jefferson, one of the family s attorneys, said in a news release that Judge Winston Kidd awarded the family $11,391,662.40.
Evidence found during an independent investigation done by the Bellinder Law Firm, Jefferson and the People’s Advocacy Institute, a Mississippi based organization dedicated to transformative justice in the South contradicted an initial ruling of suicide. ....

Three years after a 21-year-old Black man was found hanging from a tree in Scott County, his family has taken legal action to reopen the case.
According to a lawsuit filed on Dec. 28 in the Hinds County Circuit Court, lawyers on behalf of the estate of Willie Jones Jr. are suing the defendants for not acting to prevent Jones death.
