Texas history can be read through movies about the state

Michael Barnes thinks the exchange should start with “The Trip to Bountiful.”
Although he isn’t a fan of horror movies, he agrees that “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is among the most influential movies about the state.
To salute Texas Independence Week in 2019, my former American-Statesman colleague Dave Thomas and I put out a list of the 53 best books about Texas.
It contained some beloved classics, such as John Graves’ “Goodbye to a River,” and some thrilling newcomers, like Attica Locke’s “Bluebird, Bluebird and Monica Muñoz Martinez’s “The Injustice Never Leaves You.”
We encouraged readers to respond with their favorites. They did. On June 14, 2019, I published those provocative responses, including several from folks who wondered why we had left off James Michener’s doorstop novel, “Texas.”  ....

I Sat Through That? #5 - Castaway (2000)

Written by William Broyles, Jr.
Astonishingly, the story goes that FedEx were reluctant to have their brand used in this film (didn’t like the idea that one of their planes might crash). Rumour has it they had to be persuaded to allow Hanks’ character work for FedEx and that they didn’t pay a penny for product-placement. Weird, huh? Why did the writer plump for FedEx? Why not just invent a fictional delivery company? Dunno. I do know, however, that there is no escaping FedEx in Castaway. I came out of the film wanting to ship something, anything, to anywhere. I miss those magazines, but I’m sure there’s a guy in Tuvalu who’s enjoying them as we speak. ....

Spending the pandemic talking to yourself? If you live alone, you're not alone

One bleak pandemic day in November, Aisha Tyler caught herself vacuuming the inside of her freezer. Then she scolded herself. Yes, out loud.
“You’re insane,” she recalls saying. “What are you doing? You have to stop this right now.”
Sometimes the Los Angeles-based actress will shout an expletive and tell herself to “snap out of it.” On brighter days, she’ll congratulate herself on what a good job she’s doing and call for a celebration.
“I have definitely announced happy hour in my apartment several times to no one in particular,” she says, “and then I’ll tell myself what a cute martini it is, and I’ll tell myself it was delicious.” ....

Surprising Facts About 'Cast Away'

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
When FedEx employee Chuck Noland’s plane crashes, he ends up stranded on a deserted tropical island for four years, with an inanimate volleyball named Wilson as his only friend. Deemed an “existential blockbuster” for the 21
st century, not a whole lot of action occurs during
Cast Away’s 143-minute running time. But Hanks’s long beard and survival scenarios generated an iconic character and film.
It took
Apollo 13 screenwriter William Broyles Jr. six years to shape the story with Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis, to a Method degree: filming halted for a year so that Hanks could shed 50 pounds as real time passed in the movie. The movie was released on December 22, 2000, and became a huge hit, grossing $429,632,142 worldwide on a $90 million budget. Here are some facts about the film. ....
