Lawyer Who Bragged About Storming Capitol Asks Judge If He Can Get a Drink with His Steak Tonight

William McCall Calhoun Jr. previously expressed no uncertain amount of pride for taking part in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex. As a judge considered his release on Tuesday, however, Calhoun essayed a different note altogether.
“If I had to do it over again, I would not have gone into the Capitol,” he told U.S. District Judge
Dabney L. Friedrich. “I know that I messed up doing that. I apologize for being difficult.”
The judge ultimately okayed Calhoun’s bail request but not before the defendant made a remark that very well could have tanked his second bid for pre-trial release. ....

Fund established for families of poultry workers killed in nitrogen leak
A fundraising account aimed to assist the families of the six poultry workers killed in a nitrogen leak Jan. 28 has been set up through Peach State Bank.
The account, named the Gainesville Family Victim Hope Fund, is a collaborative effort by local organizations and churches to provide monetary support to the immediate families of the victims of last month’s chemical leak at Foundation Food Group in Gainesville.
Donations to the fund can be made by calling Peach State Bank at 770-536-1100 or by visiting the bank at 325 Washington Street in Gainesville. In addition, Art Gallegos with the Latinos Conservative Organization is taking personal phone calls with questions at 678-614-5011. ....

Another man from Georgia has been arrested on charges relating to the attack on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Verden Andrew Nalley, 49, of Buford, was arrested Tuesday.
Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas learned that Nalley is charged with three federal counts, though details on the charges have not been released yet. He’s charged alongside south Georgia attorney William Clahoun, who Channel 2 first reported was under arrest on Jan. 8.
Calhoun and Nalley apparently went to Washington together. Video that Calhoun posted on his social media on the day of the riot is part of the federal evidence. ....

Capitol riots: Nearly 60% of those who took part in violence faced financial hardships, says report


The Daily looked through the financial history of 125 defendants and found that the group’s bankruptcy rate remained as high as 18 percent, which is nearly twice the average rate for Americans in general. The report also revealed that while 25 percent of the group had been sued for money that they owed to a creditor, 20 percent faced the danger of losing their homes at one point. An analysis of the January 6 attacks that was conducted by the Chicago Project on Security and Threats at the University of Chicago found that 40 percent of those who were accused of taking part in the protests are business-owners and White-collar workers.  ....
