Colors, mascot announced for future Odessa Shannon Middle School
When Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Silver Spring is renamed in July, it will also have a new mascot and school colors.
In a video message, MCPS announced that the school, which will be renamed Odessa Shannon Middle School, will use wolves as its mascot. Its school colors will be blue and light green.
Blue was the top color families chose in a preference survey, and light green was Odessa Shannon’s favorite color, according to MCPS. ....

Since Montgomery County Public Schools began “preventative” COVID-19 testing of students and teachers, there have been only two positive results, according to school district leaders.
On March 25, as part of a partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks, of Boston, Mass., MCPS began rolling out what it calls “pool” COVID-19 tests to identify asymptomatic spread of the virus in its schools.
Each week, students and staff members in chosen classrooms swab their noses and put all of the swabs into a single test tube. The tube is then tested for COVID-19, and if a positive result is reported, the people included are asked to complete an individual test. ....

Samuel Quarcoo’s crusade started by happenstance in 1999, when a third-grade teacher asked him to visit her class and give a presentation about Ghana, his African homeland.
Quarcoo, who lives in Rockville, Md., was then a math teacher at Wheaton Woods Elementary School in Montgomery County. He showed the kids some photos of his old neighborhood school in Ghana and explained that the students often did not have basic supplies such as pencils and notebooks. ....
