LA County Focuses on Homeless Women and Families on Skid Row

LA County Focuses on Homeless Women and Families on Skid Row
LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted June 8 to seek more money to support an effort to house more than 600 women and families living on downtown’s Skid Row.
Supervisors Hilda Solis and Holly Mitchell recommended stepping up to assist the Downtown Women’s Center with its “Every Woman Housed” plan for the area.
“Given the surge in domestic violence and the number of women forced to leave the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, we expect that the 2022 homeless point-in-time count will show a significant increase in unhoused women in the county,” Solis said. “The county is committed to addressing ....

Martin Luther King Jr. and the Unfinished Work of Economic Justice

GUEST WORDS-In one of the most politically fraught eras in the history of the United States since the Civil War, many Americans last week turned their thoughts to commemorating the life and work of civil rights leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
First celebrated nationally in 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 marked the 35th nationwide observance of this federal holiday, passed through legislation in 1983. The day commemorates a masterful organizer, orator, and thinker whose work is not yet complete. His “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 28, 1963, before a crowd of more than 260,000 people at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, is considered one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would not have been passed without his and others’ tireless struggles.  ....

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - In an effort to allocate help resources, cities across Texas started counting the homeless population today.

Over a 24-hour period, trained volunteers will count and survey those who are staying in emergency shelters and living on the street, providing figures that will help determine how much and what type of resources are needed. ....

Due to COVID-19, Spokane's annual homeless survey won't count unsheltered individuals, city says

This year, Spokane s annual homeless count won t include homeless people without shelter.
The federally required point-in-time count survey, to be held on Jan. 28, will only count people staying in homeless shelters or in transitional housing, the city says. That means hundreds of homeless individuals who are not in a shelter or transitional housing will be excluded.
The city says the reason for the change this year is to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Cupid Alexander, director of the city s neighborhoods, housing and human services division, says the decision was made with the safety of volunteers and homeless individuals in mind, adding that other communities have made the same decision. ....
