WHY HOUSE REPUBLICANS HAVE HAD IT WITH LIZ CHENEY. On January 25, Republican Representative Dan Newhouse sent out a press release announcing that he had been chosen to serve as one of his party's assistant whips. "I'm honored to have been selected," Newhouse said. GOP Whip Steve Scalise, who chose Newhouse, added, "I'm very excited to welcome Dan to the Whip Team for the 117th Congress."
Twelve days earlier, on January 13, Newhouse voted to impeach President Donald Trump. Newhouse, who had gotten word in December that he would likely be selected for the whip team, stayed on as planned after the impeachment vote.

Earlier today "leaked" audio caught House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy talking about House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney. McCarthy is heard saying he's "had it" with her antics.
"I’ve had it with, I’ve had it with her. You know, I’ve lost confidence,” McCarthy said. "Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place."

Now, rumors are swirling Cheney's leadership role could soon come to an end. It's being reported New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who played key roles in defending President Donald Trump against impeachment, could be her replacement.

Cheney hits 'Trump cult of personality,' says she'll keep speaking out

Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, has come under increasing attack from GOP lawmakers over her vote to impeach former President Trump
“Trump is seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure that make democracy work — confidence in the result of elections and the rule of law. No other American president has ever done this,” Cheney wrote.

Cheney pushed back on rising pressure and criticism she has received in recent weeks and vowed to “defend the basic principles that underpin and protect” freedom and the U.S. democratic process.
“History is watching. Our children are watching. We must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process. I am committed to doing that, no matter what the short-term political consequences might be,” she wrote.

Ernst defends Cheney, calls for GOP unity

“Any elected official should stand their ground. If you feel firmly about something, you should stand your ground," Ernst told Politico. "But I also believe that we need to come together as a party, recognize we have differences within the party but the goal with us should be to win seats."
Ernst serves as vice chair of the Senate Republican Conference, making her one of only two women in GOP leadership in Congress, along with Cheney.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's website posted a faux "help-wanted ad" that makes light of Republicans who want to replace House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney.

The "ad" begins with a headline: "Seeking Replacement for House Republican Conference Chair."
The body of the statement reads: "Word is out that House GOP Leaders are looking to push Rep. Liz Cheney from her post as House Republican Conference Chair—their most senior woman in GOP leadership—for a litany of very Republican reasons: she won't lie, she isn't humble enough, she's like a girlfriend rooting for the wrong team, and more. So what exactly are House GOP Leaders looking for in a #3? Punchbowl AM got the scoop and, well, it's not surprising...they want a woman who isn't a 'threat' to them."

Cheney breaks with McCarthy on scope of Jan. 6 panel

“What happened on Jan. 6 is unprecedented in our history, and I think that it's very important that the commission be able to focus on that,” Cheney said at a GOP gathering in Florida when asked about the scope of the commission’s probe.

“I'm very concerned, as all my colleagues are, about the violence that we saw, the BLM, the antifa violence last summer. I think that's a different set of issues, a different set of problems and a different set of solutions,” she continued. “And so I think it's very important that the Jan. 6 commission stays focused on what happened on Jan. 6, and what led to that day."

GOP arguments against DC statehood get a little worse

GOP arguments against DC statehood get a little worse
Republicans have had plenty of time to come up with their best arguments against D.C. statehood. They just can't seem to come up with anything compelling.

The Democratic-led House is expected to vote this week on the "Washington, D.C. Admission Act" (H.R. 51), which would welcome D.C. as the nation's 51st state. The plan entails carving out a new federal district -- limited to the National Mall, to the west of Capitol Hill -- where there are no residents, while making the rest of D.C. a state.

Trump faces test of power with early endorsements

But his endorsements could prove risky as he looks to cement his hold on a party that has splintered into competing factions ahead of the midterms.
“As they’re looking at candidates, they’re trying to reshape the Republican Party away from what a lot would call a corporatist approach and more towards this America First approach,” said former Trump administration official Alexei Woltornist.
Despite losing his reelection battle in November, Trump continues to be seen as a leading figure within the party.
A Reuters-Ipsos survey conducted late last month showed 81 percent of Republicans expressing a favorable opinion of Trump, while 49 percent said they strongly disagreed with the view that the former president should not run for public office again.

Paul Ryan to host fundraiser for Cheney amid GOP tensions

To co-host, donors have been asked to pay $5,800, and $2,900 to attend the event, according to an invitation first obtained by Politico.
The fundraiser comes as Cheney will face two primary challengers — Wyoming state Rep. Chuck Gray (R) and State Sen. Anthony Bouchard (R) — after the Wyoming representative voted to impeach Trump following the Capitol insurrection Jan. 6.

Cheney has come under fire from a number of her GOP colleagues in the House. A group of conservative hardliners attempted to oust her from her leadership role following her criticism of Trump after he encouraged a group of his supporters to march to the Capitol to demand that Congress halt the certification of the 2020 election.
