Veterans Memorial Park will host Tuscaloosa's Memorial Day program

Tuscaloosa will honor the men and women who died while in the military service during a Memorial Day program, which will also double as a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for veterans and their spouses.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. May 31 at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Memorial Park, 1701 McFarland Blvd. E, in front of University Mall.
Jerry C. McAbee, a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps, will be the keynote speaker.
McAbee, a Rainsville native, is the author of “Stubborn Men and Parched Corn: The Eighteenth Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment,” a book that features recollections of McAbee s great-grandfather of the Civil War regiment from Georgia. ....

Plan to renovate Auburn-area ballpark begins with new veterans memorial

Dick Gagliardi has a plan to reinvigorate the dormant Veterans Memorial Park in Aurelius, the first part of which involves the erection of a monument that would be a replica of the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial near Washington, D.C.Â
Gagliardi and the Veterans Memorial Park Association broke ground on the memorial project last week. The monument will be positioned at the entrance to the park, which is located off Route 326 and was used to host Babe Ruth League games.Â
The construction and installation of the memorial will cost at least $50,000. Gagliardi told The Citizen he has been accepting donations from businesses and groups in the community, along with some online donations. A GoFundMe campaign launched last fall to support the construction of the monument.Â ....
