The Westbrook Housing Authority (WHA) and the University of New EnglandCenter for Excellence in Aging & Health (UNE CEAH) have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a three-year, multi-phase student placement and research partnership serving seniors aging in place in affordable housing, made possible by a $20,000 grant generously provided by Gorham Savings Bank.
Through this partnership, UNE and WHA aim to demonstrate “proof of concept” for future collaborations between medical universities and local housing authorities serving low-income populations, which often lack ready access to quality medical and dental care. ....

Kent is set to be hit with snowy and icy conditions just a day after large parts of it was flooded due to heavy rainfall.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the county and is urging people to be careful.

Icy conditions are expected throughout the day today while snow is expected on Saturday between 3am and 8pm.
The ice warning comes as rain, sleet or snow dies down and leaves a risk of icy surfaces and difficult travel conditions . ....

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have discovered how therapeutics targeting RNA splicing can activate antiviral immune pathways in triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) to trigger tumor cell death and signal the body’s immune response. A new study published in Cell shows that endogenous mis-spliced RNA in tumor cells mimics an RNA virus, leading tumor cells to self-destruct as if fighting an infection. Researchers suggest this mechanism could open new avenues for turning on the immune system in aggressive cancers like TNBC.
“We know therapeutics that partially interfere with RNA splicing can have a very strong impact on tumor growth and progression, but the mechanisms of tumor killing are largely unknown.
