Director Steve McQueen has teamed up with Motown Records UK for the official soundtrack to the landmark five-film anthology Small Axe.
Personally curated and selected by Steve McQueen, The Small Axe Official Soundtrack, featuring original score by award-winning composer Mica Levi, will be released on Record Store Day, Saturday 12th June.
Steve McQueen: “Music is an integral part of Small Axe, especially Lovers Rock. Selecting the songs was definitely one of the most fun parts of making the anthology series, so I’m really excited about the soundtrack release, especially the legendary tracks “Silly Games” and “To Be Young, Gifted And Black” performed by the brilliant Tiana Major 9 and Michael Kiwanuka.” ....

Riding high at the top of this month s Transglobal World Music Chart is the Isreali-Persian singer, songwriter and social activist Liraz Charhi.
Her new album, Zan, which means women in Farsi, was released last November. Given the dire situation for the entertainment industry, it seems appropriate that this album was crafted secretly through collaborations with musicians in Iran. The album is a mix of traditional beats with rock and jazz, and features Liraz s superb voice. ....

Director Steve McQueen (Widows, 12 Years a Slave) time travels back to 1980 to honour a marginalised but much-mythologised reggae house-party scene in Lovers Rock the high point of his five-part anthology Small Axe.

I do not know how many moments feature on this list. I know roughly the number of films, but I do not know which one is objectively the best. We could have tried to order them, to celebrate one film a little more than the others, to crown a winner of the race. But I didn t really want to do that this year.
I am not going to explain how ludicrous this year was, or try to make sense of it. All I can do is welcome you to what I hope is one of the final lists you ll read this year, in which esteemed Quietus contributors write a tribute to their favourite moments in movies they have seen this year. I don t know if they consider the film they ve chosen to be their favourite of the whole year. I was interested in the details, the frame, the experience, the design, the line reading or whatever tiny thing they found that brought them a flicker of joy, of hope in 2020. ....
