It is hard not to warm to the personality of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke (1656–1733), the most celebrated and eccentric collector of antiquities in early 18th-century Britain. In Lord Wharncliffe’s description a century later, the earl ‘distinguished himself chiefly by odd whims and peculiarities; one of which was a fixed resolution not to believe that any thing he disliked, ever did or could happen’. At the same time, he was a serious figure at a time of extraordinary transition in the scholarship of classical antiquities, when erudite antiquarians were seeking to make sense of classical art on the basis of a sometimes formidable knowledge of ancient literature and coinage, but with little access to comparative material and no established methodology. The signal achievement of Pembroke’s intellectual life was the formation of a huge collection of ancient and modern sculptures at the family seat of Wilton House in Wiltshir ....

MBU Capital have announced the successful completion of Ben’s Creek Carbon mine.
Set over approximately 10 000 acres in Wharncliffe, West Virginia, US, Ben’s Creek Carbon mine holds an estimated 22 million t of metallurgical coal reserves, which will be extracted through high-wall mining and used exclusively for the production of high strength steel. Meanwhile, a 5-mile dedicated railway load-out gives the operationally-ready deep well mine direct access to the Norfolk Southern Railway network.
Government expenditure in largescale national infrastructure projects combined with growth in the construction and the automotive sectors, has spurred the high strength steel market, which is expected to grow by CAGR 7.4% between 2020 – 2027 globally. This, in turn, has created opportunities for asset backed investments in metallurgical coal mining and steel production, a core pillar of MBU Capital’s investment strategy. ....

Man charged in relation to arson at London, Ont. motel

LONDON, ONT.
A 26-year-old London man is facing arson related charges after a fire at a southwest London motel.
Investigators from the London Police Service, Ontario Fire Marshal s Office and the London Fire Department were on scene throughout the day Wednesday at the Wharncliffe Suites Motel.
First reponders were called scene at around 2:30 Wednesday morning for a working fire within one of the rooms.
The focus of their investigation was on room 227, where there were clear indications of a fire, with the door blackened by smoke.
After viewing video surveillance police were able to identify a suspect and arrested a 26-year-old man. ....
