College summer book program benefits local children in need of reading boost

As local children count down the final days of classes, Marietta College’s Education Department is busy creating and delivering Summer Reading Adventure Packs to partner elementary schools to help get books and reading activities into the hands of certain students before they leave for summer break. 
The 300 packs will be given to children whose principals and teachers think may need extra literacy support.
“Marietta College is excited to support surrounding partnership schools with literature and activities within our summer book packs,” said Dr. Amanda Rider, Assistant Professor of Education. “The packs are intended to further engage students in literature over the summer, so they are better prepared for next fall.” ....

MOSCOW, ID Idaho author Annette Bay Pimentel recently received notification her children s book, All the Way to the Top: How One Girl s Fight for Americans with Disabilities Changed Everything was awarded the 2021 Schneider Family Book Award.
The awards committee had our publisher arrange a Zoom call to break the news to us. It was a thrill to listen with Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, who the book is about, as committee members talked about why they valued the book, said Pimentel. We are excited that this award will help connect more kids with our book. ....

“When You Trap a Tiger” by Tae Keller was chosen Monday to receive the 2021 John Newbery Medal, the highest honor in children’s literature.
The novel is a story about a girl whose family moves in with her sick grandmother. A magical tiger from Korean folklore appears to the girl and offers her a deal to help her grandmother get better.
The book also won the Asian/Pacific American Award for children’s literature.
The prize for top illustrated book, the Randolph Caldecott Medal, went to “We Are Water Protectors,” illustrated by Michaela Goade and written by Carole Lindstrom. KidsPost chose the book, which sends an urgent message about planet Earth, as one of best nonfiction kids books of 2020. ....
