Pamplin Media Group - Oregon City School Board calls on Mark Shull to resign

Oregon City School Board calls on Mark Shull to resign
Letter condemns Clackamas County commissioner's 'heinous' transphobic, Islamophobic, racist and xenophobic statements
Oregon City School District board members this week added their names to the legion of Clackamas County elected officials calling for the resignation of County Commissioner Mark Shull in light of his racist and homophobic comments.
OCSD School Board Chair Martha Spiers said Shull's "heinous" comments have resulted in County Board Chair Tootie Smith asking for Shull's resignation, making the calls for him to step down widespread and bipartisan.
Spiers and fellow OCSD School Board member Anna Farmer teamed up to write a letter to reaffirm the school board's "commitment to support everyone's right to feel seen, heard, safe, and welcome in our community by joining with other Clackamas County and regional leaders" in calling on Shull to immediately resign as county commissioner.

Clackamas County halts housing project at Estacada motel
Project would have given first priority to those displaced by wildires, eventually become workforce housing
Clackamas County commissioners voted to put the breaks on a project that would provide shelter for homeless individuals and later transition to workforce housing in Estacada.
During a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28, the commission voted 3-2 to not move forward with the due-diligence phase of the purchase of the Red Fox Motel in Estacada.
Through a program called Project Turnkey, the Oregon Legislature has earmarked $30 million for the Oregon Community Foundation to administer funds for the acquisition of motel/hotel properties in eight counties and tribal communities affected by the 2020 wildfires, and another $35 million for the rest of the state.

Community members renew calls for Mark Shull's resignation
January 21 2021
Path for healing exists, but not if commissioner remains a represenative of Clackamas County, say Muslim and LGBTQ residents
A coalition of community members representing metro-area Muslim residents and other marginalized groups held a press conference Thursday afternoon to renew calls for Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull to resign.
Shull — who recently came under scrutiny for racist, transphobic, anti-immigrant and Islamophobic statements made on his personal Facebook page — has doubled down on some of his comments in recent days. During a Board of County Commissioners meeting Thursday, Jan. 21, Shull incorrectly stated that Muslim people believe in Sharia Law over the U.S. Constitution. His comments followed nearly 45 minutes of public testimony in which community members unleashed scathing calls for his resignation.

More than 100 elected leaders, community organizations have called for Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull to immediately resign.
Leaders in Oregon's Muslim community have rejected an embattled Clackamas County Commissioner's plans for outreach and apologies — saying his hate speech requires an immediate resignation.
Newly-elected Commissioner Mark Shull referred to Muslim Americans as "invaders" and "savages" as recently as mid-2019 in his Facebook posts and called for military force against them, including "extermination outside the lands of Islam."
And while the former lieutenant colonel told The Oregonian he plans to meet with Muslim leaders to "build understanding," the most prominent officials in that community say they haven't heard from him.

When asked to say 'Black lives matter,' the Clackamas County Commissioner responded that 'all lives matter.'
Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull has apologized for social media posts expressing Islamophobic and anti-immigrant views, but said that recent public conversation has taken them out of context.
"I certainly didn't imagine that some of (the posts) would be presented to countless people, causing fear and anxiety," Shull said during an event on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Muslim Educational Trust in Tigard, describing an email with screenshots of the postings as intended to "cause a public media storm."

Clackamas County postpones a Jan. 13 swearing-in ceremony for new commissioners as Mark Shull faces condemnation.
Clackamas County has postponed a swearing-in ceremony for county commissioners. That ceremony had been planned for Wednesday, Jan. 13, but is being rescheduled, the county said, because of "recent threats of violence."
County officials said it will provide a new date for the ceremony "once they are determined." Additionally, the government said policy and business meetings would return to the streaming platform Zoom for the "foreseeable future."
While the brief announcement posted online doesn't mention newly-elected Commissioner Mark Shull — the politician has become the isolated center of a firestorm of controversy after Pamplin Media Group first reported on his Facebook posts, which widely deemed to be racist, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant and transphobic.
