Later I saw two Facebook pictures of the grad-to-be: one of a five-year-old, pigtailed Ally on her very first day of school; the other of a young woman, car keys in hand, on her very last day of compulsory education. I am still trying to do the math that has allowed so much to happen in such a short period of time. Although I will be with Ally in spirit only on her big day, during my lifetime I have attended more than forty graduations – including a couple of my own. I have been inside gymnasiums and outside in stadiums, sometimes moving from one to the other while dodging raindrops. Last year I watched commencement on the Graham website as students, surrounded by family members only, received diplomas – in the pandemic style of 2020. Regardless of location or year, however, robed and tasseled young people have always been about bidding farewell to a completed stage of their lives, even as onlookers and well-wishers have bade farewell to the youngsters they know and love now heading for the next stage in life.

Thankfully, the pictures accompanying bygone campus tales and a half century of updates allowed me to pause for the occasional, welcome moment, free of technology concerns.

It will be a joyous Mother’s Day celebration, warmed with welcome peeks of light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. Sadly, for some of us the hugging will happen only in our hearts. We will celebrate by memory, wispy echoes of bygone moments floating past all-out cinematic recollections of occasions etched in our minds. Celebrate we will – nostalgically, bittersweetly, and a bit tearfully. Personally, I will remember my mother losing herself in a book, oblivious to kitchen chores demanding attention; following Betty Crocker’s culinary instructions through a floury cloud settling on mixing bowls and measuring spoons; fingering yarn for the knits and purls of another baby blanket or firing up her Singer sewing machine to stitch dresses for daughters.

Merseyside Police were called to Kings Parade in Wallasey on Wednesday, to reports of a concern for a man in a vehicle. Police and paramedics attended shortly before 3.40pm, and the man, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Each of my 365 columns have carried the title of “Boomer Blog” to remind readers where I am located on the historical timeline we know as life. 76.4 million Boomers populated the country when I began blogging in 2014, and I just read somewhere that the 2020 census demographically lists the remaining 73 million of us as 57-75 years of age. From 1946 when the first 3½ million of us started popping up after the war, all the way down to the last 4 million who completed our boom in 1964, we have been lumped together as one generation.

A few months ago, just before the COVID-19 vaccine hit the first upper arms, African-Americans were wrapped up in a whole set of problems – they were disproportionately affected by the worst of the virus; they were the targets of terrifying misinformation; and they carried a longstanding, deep-rooted mistrust of doctors, scientists, and vaccinations of any kind. A lot has changed in two or three short months. While the rates of vaccine shots entering African-American arms does remain lower than that for white arms, about 285,000 shots administered in South Carolina (as of April 21) have gone to African-Americans, according to data from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. That’s roughly 20 percent of the state’s Black population; about 28 percent of South Carolina’s white population has been vaccinated at least once.
