SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) - Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris is proposing a $1.4 billion budget for fiscal year 2022. It includes no increase in property taxes and no major cuts.
Wednesday’s presentation was Harris’ first for his proposed fiscal year 2022 budget to Shelby County Commissioners. While not increasing property taxes, he plans for millions to go to early pre-k and pre-k options, as well as pensions, inmate mental health services and the Shelby County Fire Department. ....

MEMPHIS, Tennessee Describing it as Shelby County s road map forward , Mayor Lee Harris Wednesday morning unveiled his proposed $1.4 billion budget.
It calls for a 1.5% raise or a minimum wage bump to $15.29 for Shelby County employees, $8.5 million for the Pre-K program, two new Shelby County Fire Department stations in South Cordova and Southeast Shelby County.
The Shelby County property tax rate would also remain the same.
This is not the time to raise taxes because there are too many in this community who are still on the road to recovery given the pandemic s effects, Mayor Harris said. Once more, our property tax rate is already one of the highest in the state. ....

Ten-year-old Tennessee boy died trying to save sister from icy pond

After jumping into an icy pond to help his little sister, 10-year-old Benjamin Luckett died Sunday and his sister remains in the hospital in critical condition, said Interim Pastor Stacy Stilgenbauer of Leawood East Baptist Church.
There were five kids, all pretty active, and they were all very loving, Stilgenbauer said. They re a nice family.
Benjamin Luckett and some of his siblings were enjoying the winter weather Sunday morning when 6-year-old Abigail Luckett slipped into icy water near Millington, said Stilgenbauer, a church staff member who has known the family for almost a decade.
At least three of the kids were down near the pond, my understanding is Abigail fell in and Benjamin jumped in to go after her, Stilgenbauer said. ....
