Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has announced that Dr. David Berry will join its team on Monday, June 7, in the new position of vice-president for visitor engagement and chief museum curator. Berry has consulted as curator of Selby Gardensâ annual Orchid Show since 2015 and has served in a senior leadership capacity at The Ringling since 2011, most recently as associate director. He is also an adjunct faculty member at New College of Florida. Previously, he held the position of project curator at the Ashmoleon Museum of Art and ArchaeologyÂ at the University of Oxford. He holds a Ph.D. in modern history/history of art from the University of Oxford, a certificate in museum studies from Northwestern Un ....

An ogre sings outdoors in ‘Shrek’
“Shrek, the Musical,” the stage version of the hit animated film, is usually produced with a cast of roughly 30 playing everyone from the green ogre named Shrek to dozens of fairy tale characters. All of them will be on hand, but in a different way in a new outdoor production presented by the Dingbat Theatre Project. All the actors play multiple characters and manipulate a variety of puppets. It is staged by founder Luke Manual McFatrich (he also plays Dragon) and is choreographed by Brian Finnerty (who also plays Lord Farquaad). Cory Woomert plays Shrek, Alyssa Goudy is Princess Fiona and Derric Gobourne Jr. is Donkey. The cast also includes Noelia Altamirano, Amanda Heisey and Jamie Molina. Performances are outdoors at the Bazaar on Apricot and Lime, 821 Apricot Ave., Sarasota, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and May 13-15. William Skaggs leads the Players Centre through a time of transition

But Skaggs got a clear view of how people felt about the theater as longtime actors, volunteers and audiences took a last look backstage during a series of farewell tours.
“I knew and I understood when we had conversations about me coming here that many people considered the Players to be family,” he said in a recent interview. “One of the most impressive things in my time here is how often that term is used and it’s unprompted and people really care about this 91-year-old organization known as The Players.”
That became obvious again two weeks ago when volunteers started posting photos of work crews demolishing the old building, knocking down exterior walls and exposing some of the painted posters representing shows presented years ago. ....
