KATHERINE: NEBRASKA’S INSPECTOR GENERAL OF CORRECTIONS IS TAKI A DEEPER DIVE TO FIND OUT WHY SOME INMATES WALK AWAY FROM WORK REASLEE PROGRAMS, AND HE’S LOOKING FOR A WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. INSPECTOR GENERAL DOUG KOEBERNICK AND HIS STAFF INTERVIEWED ROUGHLY 15 MEN AND WOMEN, ALL CURRENTLY INCARCERATED, AFTER COECRRTIONS EXPERIENCED AN UPTICK IN WALK-AWAY CASES EARLY THIS YEAR. >> A LOT OF THEM ARE WITHIN MONTHS OF WALKING AWAY FREE, AND THAT’S BASICALLY WHY WE WENT AND DID THIS, TOO. WWEANTED FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. KATHERINE: KOEBERNICK SAY MANY WERE DEALING WITH FAMILY ISSS,UE SOME FAILED TO GO TO THE MEETING SPOT AT THE END OF THE WORK Y, THEN PANICKED, AND SOME WERE SIMPLY FRUSTRATED WITH THE WORK ITSELF. HE ADDS, MANY SHOWED REGRET FOR LEAVG.IN >> SOME OF THEM BECAME VERY EMOTIONAL TALKING ABOUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LED TO THAT. KATHERINE: NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES DIRECTOR SCOTT FRAKES SAYS THERE ARE PROTOCOLS AND STRATEGIESN I PLACE TO KEEP INMATES FROM ESCAPING. >> WE TRY TO WORK WITH PEOPLTOE HELP GIVE THEM SKILLS AND GIVE THEM TOOLS, SO THEY CAN MAKE BETTER DECISIONS AND WORK ON THE IMPULSE CONTROL, BUT COLLECTIVELY, IT IS A GRP OU PEOPLE THAT STRUGGLES WITH TT. KATHERINE: FRAKES DEFENDS WORK RELEASE PROGRAMS.
