Ken "Rotch" Rothschiller: 1947-2021

Throughout his life, the artistic sensibility of Ken “Rotch” Rothschiller manifested in many forms, Rotch was best known, and beloved, for being Humboldt County‘s first surfboard manufacturer, shaping and glassing beautiful, functional surfboards that were invariably works of art.
A longtime resident of Manila, Rotch was born in Klamath Falls, Ore. His family moved to Eureka when he was nine months old, renting a place over Phillip’s Camera shop until his dad had the opportunity to buy five-and-a-half acres of land in Manila – for $300 – where Rotch and his friends would make rafts out of old railroad ties to play around in the bay. This interest in being on the water grew exponentially when Rotch began surfing in 1963. He was a junior at Arcata High at the time and inspired by a surf contest on the Wide World of Sports. When relaying what motivated him to start, Rotch said, in a long-ago interview, “I just looked at it and thought, ‘Wow, that is so cool.’”

DULUTH — George Hovland grew up skiing in Duluth and never stopped.
When he was 18 months old, his parents taught him to ski on the snow bank in their front yard. By 11, he had launched himself off the Big Chester ski jump. And by 25, was on the U.S. cross-country team at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo.

Yellowstone roads to close for 2021 spring snow plowing


MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. - Roads in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) will begin to close to oversnow travel March 7, YNP announced Monday. 
Spring plowing will start as road segments close. They said all oversnow travel will end for the season March 15 at 9 p.m.
Weather-permitting, some park roads will reopen to automobile travel April 16 at 8 a.m.
Road closure dates are as follows (gates close at 9 p.m.):
• March 7, Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris
• March 9, Norris to Madison, Norris to Canyon Village
• March 14, Canyon Village to Fishing Bridge
• March 15, all remaining groomed roads  
Visitor services closure dates
• At Mammoth Hot Springs, the hotel and cabins, Gift Shop, Ski Shop and food services will close March 1. The Mammoth Campground, Yellowstone General Store, Post Office, Medical Clinic and self-serve fuel pumps stay open all year.
