On the drive north, we entered the white realm as we reached the higher elevations near Chama, after climbing out of the stunning orange, yellow, and tan sandstone cliff and mesa country around Abiquiu. The land lay locked under a blanket of white, with frosted trees, rivers slipping silently beneath mantles of ice, and homes burdened with snow piled high on their roofs.

But as we await better days, here’s a look at one of New Mexico’s skiing institutions, Rick Richards of Taos Ski Valley (TSV). Richards is the author of the excellent, informative and colorful book Ski Pioneers: Ernie Blake, His Friends, and the Making of Taos Ski Valley, and has been a key member of Taos’ acclaimed ski school for 35 consecutive years, though he is taking off this winter due to COVID concerns. Last July, he decided to buy Fresh52 Farmers’ & Artisan Market with locations at Tivoli Village and at Sansone Park Place in Henderson. Thomas spent 20 years working at Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Pinnacle Entertainment before he decided to take up farming. “I didn’t feel fulfilled. I didn’t like the political side of things. The turnover is so high, and it was a high stress job. I knew I had a passion for agriculture,” he says.
