While the pandemic has been particularly brutal in the United States in general, the situation has been much worse for those living in the world’s largest system of incarceration. According to a recent New York Times report, 34 out of 100 people in prisons across the country have contracted the virus, more than triple the rate of the general US population. During the pandemic, an average of seven people locked behind bars have died of Covid-19 every day. One immigration detention center in Virginia saw a nearly 100% infection rate. The real overall numbers are most likely higher due to inconsistent and poor testing measures. Many inmates, like the 3,800 who were infected at the Fresno, California, county jail, have not yet been to trial. ....

Chaos as Inmates Break Windows, Set Fire at St. Louis Justice Center - Again


Uprising at St. Louis City Justice Center - April 4, 2021
The relative peace and quiet of a pleasantly warm Sunday Easter evening in St. Louis were interrupted by an uprising at the St. Louis City Justice Center. Around 8:40 pm, inmates at the Justice Center broke out windows on the third floor and tossed out furniture and clothing, and started a fire on the building’s exterior. The initial chaos quieted down about an hour-and-a-half later, only to give way to a second outburst in another section of the building.
As the Post Dispatch reports:
Inmates broke through the windows on the northwest corner of the third floor of the jail, below windows that were boarded up from the last riot in February. They threw furniture, a computer, toilet paper and their own clothing to the street below, and started a fire on the exterior of the building. Some chanted “We want court dates,” a reference to delays in court appearances and trials caused by the pandemic. ....

Inmates broke windows, set a fire and threw debris to the ground late Sunday at a downtown St. Louis jail that s been plagued by uprisings in recent months.
The disturbance broke out Sunday night at about 9 o clock at the City Justice Center, CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV reported. Inmates were seen tossing objects out of broken windows and setting a fire. Firefighters used a hose to douse the flames. The objects included chairs and TVs, KMOV reporter Alexis Zotos tweeted.
