How the IHRA antisemitism definition became a pro-Israel cudgel – Mondoweiss

New research charts a five-year campaign by highly partisan, pro-Israel lobby groups to mislead the international community about the nature of what has been widely described as the “gold standard” definition of antisemitism.
According to a report published this week, the campaign has been so successful that political parties, the European Commission, European parliaments, and major public institutions, including universities, have been deceived.
They have been persuaded that the new definition of antisemitism is far more expansive than the terms adopted by the international body behind it. As a result, many governments and institutions have wrongly concluded that the definition severely curtails what can legitimately be said about Israel. ....

This month, the UvA and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will reflect on the 20th anniversary of the study and research programme Holocaust and Genocide Studies in the Netherlands. What once began with three students has developed into a unique and international programme that attracts students and researchers from all over the world.

April 2021 marks precisely 20 years since the Dutch government, the UvA and the NIOD decided to establish a centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. That establishment was connected with the signature of the Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust (2000), with which the Netherlands promised to actively devote itself to academic research and teaching in this field. ....

Greece has taken over the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) from Germany.
Due to the pandemic, the handover ceremony took place online and included addresses by Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Deputy Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, Education and Religious Affairs Minister Niki Kerameos, and Ambassador Christodoulos Lazaris, who will serve as the IHRA President. The IHRA is the largest global organisation which unites governments, academics and experts on the critical mission of strengthening, advancing and promoting Holocaust education, research and remembrance worldwide and upholding the ....

Sweden has been entrusted with holding the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) from 1 March 2022 until 28 February 2023. The decision was taken at the IHRA’s digital plenary meeting in Leipzig on 3 December 2020.
