What do you think is the leading threat to America s moral fabric? Child abuse, laziness, ego mania, racism, poverty, greed, atheism? My pick is perhaps less obvious, a subtle but growing force that imperils souls and kindles greed: gambling.
That obsession has grown tenaciously, often covertly, into a force that helps instill a strain of individualism without empathy, a strain of self-seeking that can be seen as a component in a drift toward self-seeking cited by social and political analysts as a major cause of our country s political bickering and hostility to legislation aimed at reducing the rich-poor gap and improving justice and social welfare of the less fortunate. ....

PARMA, Ohio – President Warren G. Harding was inaugurated as the nation’s 29th president on March 4, 1921. Just a few days later, on March 10, Sue Peterchalk was born to Eastern European immigrant parents in Portage, Pennsylvania.
Peterchalk, now a Parma resident, is the city’s newest centenarian. She received a proclamation recently from Parma City Council President Sean Brennan. Ward 9 Councilman Roy Jech also signed the proclamation. ....

Officer William Evans Laid to Rest in Adams


 
Evans funeral Mass was held at noon at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and officiated by Bishop William D. Byrne of the Springfield Diocese. Byrne had previously been pastor at St. Peter s Church on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
 
The funeral was private with family and friends, and a long list of public officials including Gov. Charlie Baker, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, U.S. Rep. Richie Neal, state Sen. Adam Hinds, state Reps. John Barrett III and William Smitty Pignatelli, North Adams Mayor Thomas Bernard and City Councilors Lisa Blackmer and Jason Laforest and Adams officials.
 
A contingent from the Capitol Police were also in attendance along with local, state, and regional law enforcement, including Adams Police Chief Scott Kelley, North Adams Police Chief Jason Wood, and Pittsfield Police Chief Michael Wynn. ....

Meg Loncharic: Hagen History Center inviting the community to A Night at the Museum

For the past three years, there have been preparations for a new day at the Hagen History Center, according to a statement from the organization. If you have driven by the campus on West Sixth Street, you have seen the progress.
Old buildings have been restored, and a new building has been constructed. There’s been an investment of more than $11 million during the past three years, and the eight new professionally designed exhibits are sure to inspire you, according to the statement. In addition, a national exhibit, which will be unveiled this summer, will make the Hagen History Center a major tourist destination. ....
