Baton Rouge / louisianaradionetwork.com May 20, 2021 | 7:57 AM The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry and other business groups are asking Governor Edwards to stop the 300-dollar weekly federally enhanced unemployment benefits. LABI President Stephen Waguespack says at one time this additional benefit was needed, but now it’s making it difficult for employers to fully staff their businesses. “Those folks are having a really difficult time right now getting people back to work,” said Waguespack. Waguespack says instead of extra unemployment dollars, he suggests using that money to provide a hiring bonus for when out-of-work individuals find a job. LABI says 17 other states have already opted out of the additional funding. ....

Roads and bridges that are deteriorated, congested, or lack some desirable safety features cost Louisiana motorists a total of $7.6 billion statewide annually–as much as $2,431 per driver in some areas–due to higher vehicle operating costs, traffic crashes, and congestion-related delays. Increased investment in transportation improvements at the local, state and federal levels could relieve traffic congestion, improve road, bridge and transit conditions, boost safety, and support short- and long-term economic growth in Louisiana, according to a new report released today by TRIP, a Washington, DC based national transportation research nonprofit. ....
