Iowa Republican lawmakers are divided on whether to increase funding for the state s three public universities in next year s state budget. House Republicans have proposed a budget that would not provide any new funding for the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. The flat budget in the Iowa House would come after the Legislature cut $8 million from the Board of Regents budget last year, essentially extending that cut for another year. The Iowa Senate s proposal, however, would increase funding by $8.2 million for the Iowa Board of Regents to be split between the three universities. ....

Concepts that would be off limits under the bill include teaching “that the U.S. and the state of Iowa are fundamentally or systemically racist or sexist.” It also bans “race or sex scapegoating,” teaching that “an individual, by virtue of their race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously,” as well as several other concepts. ....
