CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL)- With the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo less than a week away, dozens took part in their own Olympic games in Cedar Falls Saturday. While the Special Olympics Iowa state in-person competitions are still suspended due to the pandemic, in-person Area Competitions are happening this year.  We have been slowly trying to get into games in-person, Special Olympics Iowa Director of Regional Field Services Katie Schrodt said. This is a modified version of our typical spring area games. Special Olympics athletes competed in the 50M dash, 100M dash, softball throw, standing long jump, and mini javelin throw. Athletes will still not be competing head-to-head with other teams due to the pandemic, but the in-person events will allow them to put their training to the test for the first time in 15 months. Events are still not open to spectators.
