Special Olympics holds first in-person competition in Cedar Falls in over a year

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL)- With the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo less than a week away, dozens took part in their own Olympic games in Cedar Falls Saturday.
While the Special Olympics Iowa state in-person competitions are still suspended due to the pandemic, in-person Area Competitions are happening this year.
We have been slowly trying to get into games in-person, Special Olympics Iowa Director of Regional Field Services Katie Schrodt said. This is a modified version of our typical spring area games.
Special Olympics athletes competed in the 50M dash, 100M dash, softball throw, standing long jump, and mini javelin throw. Athletes will still not be competing head-to-head with other teams due to the pandemic, but the in-person events will allow them to put their training to the test for the first time in 15 months. Events are still not open to spectators. ....

Baldwin sued police for false arrest, a case that in 2018 went before the Iowa Supreme Court. The question: What kind of immunity, if any, should Iowa police and other government officials have against suits for allegedly violating Iowans rights? The court s answer was that defendants are entitled to so-called qualified immunity, so long as they could prove they had exercised all due care to conform to the requirements of the law.   ....

Qualified immunity, police complaints subjects of Iowa Senate bill

Des Moines Register
Iowa s law enforcement officers would get more information in complaint investigations, including the names of people who file complaints against them, if a Senate bill becomes law.
The bill, which lawmakers advanced through a subcommittee meeting Thursday, would also add a definition of qualified immunity to Iowa code, spelling out the protections officers have from civil lawsuits.
Senate Study Bill 1178 has the support of some law enforcement groups, whose representatives on Thursday said the bill adds needed protections for law enforcement officers.
These provisions are necessary to ensure that we can hold our people accountable, but also to ensure that we have a reliable investigation and process, Skylar Limkemann, the attorney for the Iowa Fraternal Order of Police, said.  ....
