With South Africa s vaccination campaign moving at a snail s pace, President Cyril Ramaphosa has been forced to tighten lockdown restrictions in a bid to contain a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
South Africa has vaccinated less than 2% of its population of about 59 million since it started its programme in February.
This is in contrast with the US where almost 46% of the population of more than 330 million has been fully vaccinated.
In contrast, President Ramaphosa has been forced to:

A group of top SA medical specialists has called on the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) to lift the pause on administering the J&J Covid-19 vaccine immediately, citing research published this week that explains the rarity of the blood clotting condition that has caused concerns about its safety. ....

“We could not have done it [vaccine acquisition] differently” and it was “such a fluid area”, said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize during an online discussion with business leaders on Monday.
The event was organised by the Wits Business School and focused on the challenges and opportunities during the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out in South Africa. Mkhize was joined by Professor Shabir Madhi, Cas Coovadia, Dr Ron Whelan and Stavros Nicolau. All have worked with the department in its Covid-19 response.
Mkhize said that in a pandemic, conditions changed constantly and required a lot of consultation and negotiation to make the best of a situation. ....
