Mahre, 63, a native of Yakima, Wash., is widely regarded as one of Americaâs greatest ski racing talents, along with his brother Steve. Phil was a member of three U.S. Olympic teams in 1976, 1980 and 1984, taking the gold in slalom in Sarajevo, and capturing a silver medal in slalom at Lake Placidâs 1980 games.
Despite those extraordinary performances, he is perhaps best remembered for winning the FIS Overall Alpine World Cup crowns from 1981-83. He won 27 individual World Cup races and competed as a member of the U.S. Ski Team from 1976-1984, making him the American male who has won the most overall World Cups. ....

The first 10th Mountain Troopers were an elite group of ski and mountaineering soldiers who were instrumental in winning World War II.
The 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry is a division of the U.S. Army based at Fort Drum and designated as a mountain warfare unit. The division is the only one of its size in the U.S. military to receive intense specialized training for fighting in mountainous and arctic conditions.
The red, white and blue shoulder sleeve patch of the 10th Mountain Division consists of a white-bordered powder keg. The bayonets represent the infantry, and the crossed bayonets represent the numerical designation of the 10th Mountain Division. ....
