City of Spokane cancels fireworks shows due to fire danger

SPOKANE, Wash. Fourth of July fireworks shows at Dwight Merkel, Ferris High School, Avista Stadium and Plante’s Ferry have been cancelled due to fire danger.
The City of Spokane announced the decision Thursday, and said a separate fireworks show will be held at a later date.
“Safety is always at the forefront, and in consultation with our regional public safety officials, we’re looking forward to bringing the community a fireworks celebration when conditions are more favorable,” said Parks & Rec director Garrett Jones.
Fire officials warn that drought, unseasonably dry conditions and record-breaking heat are recipes for disastrous fires, and any fireworks accidents could quickly spiral into wildfires that will be extremely difficult to control. ....

Spokane Indians Return To The Park After A Year Off

Tuesday was Opening Day for the Spokane Indians baseball club. That’s a big day in any year, but especially this year because the 2020 minor league season was cancelled.
The Indians are not only adjusting to pandemic-related changes, but also to a radical restructuring of the minor league baseball system.
Major League Baseball reduced the minor league system from 160 teams to 120 during the offseason. Some long-time franchises lost their affiliations with major league teams. Spokane wasn’t among the 40 teams axed, but its situation was not clear until only recently.
“We are now two levels higher than we’ve been for the last 40 years in the baseball world. We’re two levels up, which means we’re High-A as our classification. All of our players are going to be bigger, better, faster, stronger. They’re older than they’ve been. We’re going to have better baseball here than we’ve seen in a long time, said Spokane Indian ....

Rockies invite four full-season affiliates under new player development structure

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies today announced affiliate invitations to four Minor League teams as part of Major League Baseball’s new player development structure.
The Rockies have formally invited the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A), Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A), Spokane Indians (High-A) and Fresno Grizzlies (Low-A) to be Minor League affiliates under the new structure.
“We are thrilled with the teams that we will call home for our Minor League Baseball program next season and well into the future. We have had great relationships in Albuquerque and Hartford, and look forward to our new partnerships in Spokane and Fresno.” said Rockies Owner/Chairman and CEO Dick Monfort. ....
